Cole, Audrey and I dyed Easter eggs on Wednesday night. (Okay, they actually did all the coloring and I just took lots of pictures.) I had wanted to wait for the weekend, but once Audrey saw me boiling dozens of eggs for school, there was no holding back.
Audrey and Cole sat together in the same chair. He would dye the eggs and at first, she would just watch. She would point to the cup she thought he should try next and he would patiently give in to her demands. As I watched and listened to their conversations, I began thinking about how many families miss out on seeing their kids bond over simple things like this.
Sometimes Audrey would stick her finger in the food coloring and then wipe it on her nightgown. Of course, there was a towel sitting in her lap, but what fun would that be?
As she watched Cole dip each egg, she was quiet. She was soaking in everything he did. It made me wonder if she was curious or if she was hesitant to jump right in without seeing the process first.
Cole enjoyed dipping an egg in multiple colors and watching as the new color would replace the old.
Once Audrey decided it was time to get actively involved, there were arms and hands flying everywhere. How all but one of these cups remained standing was beyond me.
Cole practiced a little crayon resist with one of his eggs. Somehow, the fact that he chose to write Easter resonated with me. Of all the decorating he could have done, this is what he chose to end with.
In the end, Cole colored lots more eggs than Audrey, but she enjoyed every second of it.
I am inspired by my children’s ability to take something small and make it special.
Although dyeing eggs, special outfits, Easter pictures, bunnies, candy and baskets are fun, it is far beyond my ability to even begin to fathom sacrificing one of my children for the sake of others. What a wonderful blessing He has given us to live eternally through the death and resurrection of His son, Jesus.
I hope that everyone has a blessed Easter weekend.
